Job Description - Auditing and Accounting Manager

The Accounting and Auditing Manager is responsible for large, complex engagements and may oversee two or more engagements simultaneously.  He or she must demonstrate an ability to assume full responsibility for directing engagement and special assignments, and can review workpapers, financial statements, and reports of discussions with clients.  The manager directs staff assigned to their engagements, reviews programs, ensures that assignments are accomplished within the budgeted time, reviews workpapers for accuracy and completeness, and reviews the financial statements for suitability of presentation and adequacy of disclosures.  The manager follows the progress of the engagement and helps resolve accounting and auditing problems as they arise.  The manager has responsibility for complying with pronouncements of professional and other regulatory groups. 

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinate the various phases of an engagement, including staff requirements, locations to be visited, and job planning and scheduling, with the senior manager or shareholder.  Plan the logistics of the engagement.
  • Study and evaluate the internal controls used by the client, and prepare or review the audit, review or compilation program and time budget for subsequent approval by a senior manager or  shareholder.
  • Assign work to staff members on the basis of their knowledge and capabilities.
  • Support the training of staff members, offer guidance and direction, and provide constructive criticism of workpapers.  Prepare and review staff on large engagements.
  • Evaluate workpapers and determine whether the audit was performed in accordance with United States generally accepted auditing standards.
  • Review with the senior manager or shareholder any significant audit or accounting findings that raise questions involving accounting principles or statement presentation.
  • Prepare or review financial statements, notes, schedules, management letters, and tax returns for later discussion between the senior manager or shareholder and the client.  In some instances the supervisor may discuss these matters with the client.
  • Serve in continuing educational programs as an instructor or discussion leader. 

Position Requirements:

Masters Degree with Accounting Major plus a minimum of 3-5 years in public accounting, in progressively responsible positions required.  CPA designation required.
