Job Description - Tax Senior

Reviews simple tax returns. Demonstrates an understanding of tax issues related to the preparation of returns and be able to resolve issues through communications with the client and the accounting department. Properly organizes files with all issues addressed and documented. He or she should be able to work independently, supervise and instruct assistants in the work to be performed, review their completed work and advise them as to necessary revisions in their work. This individual is able to make decisions on routine matters. When non-routine issues arise, the senior accountant provides an overview of the issue(s) and makes recommendation(s) to the supervisor, manager or shareholder for their decision.
 

Essential Functions:

  •  Prepares various federal and state tax returns of varying levels of difficulty for review by superiors. Typical returns prepared include those of partnerships, corporations, S corporations, individuals, and organizations exempt from income tax.
  •  Prepares workpapers which are organized and easy to review.
  • Maintains fixed/intangible asset records necessary for calculating depreciation and amortization.
  • Performs various tax research projects, and provides documentation in the appropriate format.
  • Gains an understanding of the adjustments necessary for differences between book income and taxable income, and learns how to document them in a tax provision.
  • Prepares tax projections based upon supplied information, which are used to make tax planning recommendations to clients.
  • Identifies issues which need to be addressed by the reviewer.
  • Makes necessary changes to a project after review, and learns from re-work.
  • Makes efficient use out of computer resources, and becomes familiar with the tax preparation software.
  • Organizes and prioritizes projects to ensure timely service to our clients, as well as anticipates any potential problems to avoid surprises.
  • Drafts effective correspondence to clients and taxing authorities, as well as writes internal memos. 
  • Maintains a positive attitude, is enthusiastic and a team player.
  • Communicates effectively with co-workers and third party resources.

Position Requirements:

Bachelors Degree with accounting major plus two years of experience as a staff accountant required. CPA designation or in the process of passing the CPA examination also required.
